Dermot Gallagher says he thinks Chelsea got lucky with VAR call against West Ham

Chelsea did their talking on the pitch at the weekend as they made it three wins in a row away from home.

The Blues ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a Nicolas Jackson brace and Cole Palmer’s second goal of the season.

Jackson was one of the players named in the Premier League Team of the Week alongside Moises Caicedo, with the Senegal international continuing to prove doubters wrong when it comes to wanting a new striker.

After going 2-0 up though, the Blues were given a scare when Crysencio Summerville seemed to get in behind, before going down following contact from Wesley Fofana.

The referee on the pitch decided it was not enough for a penalty, with VAR seeming to agree as no retrospective action was taken.

Gallagher thinks Wesley Fofana should have given away a penalty vs West Ham

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher was not convinced though, telling Sky Sports that he believes the wrong decision was made.

He said: “I think it’s a penalty, and I think it’s a penalty because he holds him so long. If you watch, it starts outside the penalty area, he holds him, holds him, holds him and then he goes down. I think he’s got him too long.

“I think the dilemma for the VAR was that, look where the referee is now, the referee has the perfect view of it, and he actually says no. So I think in this case, it’s referee’s call on field, because he’s so confident it’s not a penalty.

“Is it a massive howler? Well, I think it’s a penalty, so to me it’s wrong, but the VAR is not there to judge, it’s there to decide if it’s a massive howler.”

Chelsea fans already frustrated with referees

Chelsea fans will likely feel that even if it should have been a penalty, they have been due a bit of fortune when it comes to decisions made by officials.

Enzo Maresca was fuming against Crystal Palace when Will Hughes escaped what looked a certain second yellow card, with his replacement off the bench setting up the equalising goal that day.
