Dermot Gallagher says whether Chelsea should have had a penalty vs Liverpool

Liverpool were awarded a penalty in their 2-1 win against Chelsea over the weekend, but many Blues supporters feel that their side also should have been given one.

Enzo Maresca shared that sentiment during the game. Maresca was quick to appeal for a spot-kick after Jadon Sancho was taken out by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Nothing was given, though, and Chelsea went on to lose the match despite managing to cancel out Mohamed Salah’s penalty through Nicolas Jackson.

Shortly after the 23-year-old’s goal, Liverpool retook the lead thanks to Curtis Jones.

Dermot Gallagher on Jadon Sancho penalty incident

Sancho did not have the best game against Liverpool, with the winger being taken off at half-time.

However, he has now found himself centre of a big talking point from the game. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has had his say on the incident that Sancho was involved in, claiming that John Brooks and the VAR were right not to award the 24-year-old and Chelsea a penalty.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I just didn’t think it was a foul, I just didn’t think it was a foul. Both players are tangled. I would be very surprised if that was given as a penalty.”

Leon Osman was not too impressed with Sancho‘s overall performance at Anfield, feeling that Pedro Neto did a much better job than his teammate when he came on.

Chelsea definitely should have had a penalty

It is hard to agree with Gallagher here. Sancho was clearly taken out by Alexander-Arnold, who did not play any of the ball, and should have been awarded a penalty as a result.

It could have changed the whole complexion of the game. If Maresca has looked back at that and is now frustrated about it, then he has every right to be.

Chelsea really should have got something out of that match, but the Blues have to move on now because they have another tough game in the Premier League coming up.

Maresca’s men welcome Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Dropping out of the top four, they will be desperate to win that and deal one of their rivals for European football a blow.
