As Chelsea’s struggles with goalkeepers threaten to completely derail their season, one of their loanees has been proving the decision to let him leave this season could be one to regret.

Djordje Petrovic has enjoyed a tremendous season so far at sister club Strasbourg, with their fans and coaches being huge fans of his.

The reason that was noted as why the Blues were happy to let him go was a belief Petrovic doesn’t suit Maresca’s style, with him insistent on playing out from the back.

Petrovic’s passing has improved since his move to Ligue 1, and there seems a real avenue for a goalkeeper to make their mark at Stamford Bridge after poor performances this season.

Djordje Petrovic still likely to leave Chelsea despite starring for Strasbourg

Both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have come in for criticism during this campaign for their displays between the sticks, with the Dane the latest to receive backlash.

Chelsea fans were jeering Jorgensen during the win over Southampton despite ending up keeping a clean sheet in that game.

Despite there being a clear path to the number one jersey next season, transfer insider Graeme Bailey has told The Chelsea Chronicle that he does not see Petrovic being the starting goalkeeper next season.

He said: “I don’t see a role for Petrovic, he had a small window. Does he have a future as a number two? I wouldn’t rule it out because he’s already there, but they’ve got a lot of ‘keepers. I think Penders could end up at Strasbourg.

“I think Maresca wants a top-class keeper with his feet, and do Chelsea think they’ve got that in their current clutch, I don’t think they do.”

Enzo Maresca demands new goalkeeper

Despite publicly backing both of his shot-stoppers multiple times this season, Maresca will no doubt be sick of the amount of points they have dropped from individual errors between the sticks.

It has been claimed Maresca is demanding a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, with a focus on their ability to play the ball out from the back.

Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen has been named as a target of the club, however some supporters may have hesitance for the Blues to sign another player from the Amex.
