Brentford’s Ben Mee has highlighted Chelsea’s Levi Colwill for a special mention when discussing English defenders.

Levi Colwill, who’s just 20, is yet another supreme talent developed in Chelsea’s academy at Cobham.

The left-footed centre-back is now a first-team star in the Blues squad at Stamford Bridge, making 14 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

It looks like he’s made a positive impression on Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino when you check on his amount of minutes this campaign, whether that’s been at centre-half or as cover at left-back.

Unfortunately, he dropped out of England’s latest senior squad this month because of a shoulder problem. However, he’s been pictured via the 5th stand app earlier this week involved in first-team training with his Chelsea teammates.

English talent

Brentford centre-half Ben Mee, 34, is impressed by several defenders from England. This includes Chelsea’s young rising star.

“[Fikayo] Tomori’s playing fantastic over where he’s playing and [Levi] Colwill’s been doing great as well. And I’ve always been a big fan of Lewis Dunk…,” Mee told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

Levi Colwill has plenty more gears

In our view, we’re not even close to seeing the best version of Colwill yet. Let’s remember he’s still only 20 and is playing out of position at full-back.

We think he’s got a massive future in the heart of Chelsea’s defence as the main ball-playing centre-back.

For now, the English youngster is in a fascinating battle for a spot in the best Blues XI.

The left-back spot is extra intriguing since Marc Cucurella recently returned to some form. Meanwhile, there’s so many great centre-halves in the squad fighting for two starting positions. This includes the likes of Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi.

WhoScored recently recorded Colwill in the Premier League Team of the Season so far for Under-21s players. It’s a testament to how quickly he’s settled into the Blues squad after a successful loan at Brighton last year.
