Eidur Gudjohnsen praises Chelsea for the ‘very important’ thing they did in the summer

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have been heavily criticised for how they have run Chelsea since taking over the club.

However, Chelsea legend Eidur Gudjohnsen has suggested that Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and the Blues’ two sporting directors did a really good job in the summer.

Gudjohnsen has been speaking ahead of Chelsea‘s Conference League tie against Gent later, with his son, Andri Gudjohnsen, in contention to play against Enzo Maresca‘s men.

Maresca wants to see Chelsea control games better, with his side being involved in a six-goal thriller with Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.

What has Eidur Gudjohnsen said about Chelsea’s summer?

Chelsea saw some high-profile departures in the summer. Raheem Sterling and Conor Gallagher, for example, both left the club despite being key players for the team last season.

For Gudjohnsen, it was “very important” for Chelsea to sanction such exits, and he now thinks the club are doing good on the pitch.

Speaking to Gazet van Antwerpen, the former forward said: “Chelsea are doing very well. It turns out something good is happening, on the field at least. This summer it was very important that they trimmed the core in order to find a good mix.”

Gallagher was recently torn apart by the Spanish media for his performance in Atletico Madrid’s 4-0 loss to Benfica.

Could there be more exits at Chelsea?

Chelsea’s squad is still quite a big one, so it would not be a surprise to see an exit or two in January.

Last month, it was claimed that Mykhailo Mudryk could switch teams in January, with the winger finding starts hard to come by at the moment.

In the Premier League this season, Mudryk has only played one game from the beginning. Benoit Badiashile is another name Chelsea could look to offload.

The central defender is yet to feature in the Premier League at all under Maresca. There is also Ben Chilwell, whom Chelsea already tried to get rid of in the summer.

Failing to find a suitor for him, though, the left-back was reintegrated into the first team. But he obviously remains a candidate to leave after initially being frozen out by the Chelsea boss.
