Enzo Fernandez played a key role as the Chelsea star sparkled in Argentina’s World Cup semi-final win over England on Wednesday night in Atlanta – and has teased a Man City player on Instagram.

Having scored a late winner for Argentina in their incredible 3-2 comeback win over Egypt in the previous round, Fernandez netted Argentina’s equaliser on Wednesday night with a stunning strike from 25 yards.

Chelsea fans, you know Thomas Tuchel very well. What did you make of his tactics in England’s loss to Argentina? 🤔

Fernandez had clearly been given a license to try his luck from range by manager Lionel Scaloni, after a few shots had whistled over Jordan Pickford’s bar. He then saw a shot tipped over by the Chelsea target.

From the resulting corner, the ball found its way to Fernandez who smashed an effort into the top corner with Pickford flat-footed. Argentina would then go on to win and send Thomas Tuchel’s men packing.

Enzo Fernandez teases Elliot Anderson after VAR missed moment

But it could have been very different for Fernandez. The cameras seemed to miss a moment in which the Chelsea player appeared to use his forearm on the back of Elliot Anderson’s head, a moment VAR missed.

Anderson was seen on the deck in the aftermath, holding the back of his head after he had won the ball following a duel with Lionel Messi. Fernandez then came in with a nasty-looking forearm smash.

Social media picked up on the incident during and after the match, with VAR seemingly failing to pick up the moment. Had they done, the referee might well have been invited to go to the monitor to watch it.

With Argentina now through and Fernandez playing a key role, the midfielder has taken to Instagram to tease Man City’s new £116m star with an image of him next to Anderson on the floor, holding his head.

Did Enzo Fernandez deserve a red card?

Chelsea criticised for deleting Enzo Fernandez post

Not only has Fernandez and VAR come under scrutiny from England supporters following Argentina’s 2-1 win, but Chelsea’s admin is under fire. After his goal, Chelsea’s admin praised Fernandez on social media.

They uploaded an image of Fernandez cupping his ears during his celebration, urging the Argentine fans to make more noise. But it was quickly deleted when England fans criticised Chelsea for making the post.

One thing is for sure, Fernandez seems to be a magnet for controversy and not simply because of his World Cup exploits. Xabi Alonso has made it clear he would like to keep the £120m-rated midfielder.

With Argentina now in the final, a conclusion to the rumours surrounding his future are set to continue for another few weeks. Real Madrid remain interested, but as reported, not at the £120m asking price.
