Enzo Maresca excited by Josh Acheampong

Chelsea head coach Maresca believes that Josh Acheampong has the potential to have a huge future in the game.

The 18-year-old right-back, who’s come through the Blues youth system, is currently playing for the Under-21s team. But he’s been around the first-team scene in the last couple of months, including during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

“I really like Josh. For me, potentially he can be a top player, a top defender for the future,” Maresca said, as quoted by Football.London.

“With young players, I have quite a bit of experience and I like to modify them a little bit. Today, with young players; they can change very quickly. They can think they are so good, or so bad, so I think you need to moderate the way they train.”

Josh Acheampong should get senior minutes this month

With Reece James and Malo Gusto both currently unavailable through injury, Chelsea are using players out of position to cover in the full-back spot. Therefore, we’d like to see Acheampong get some minutes in the next week.

The Blues travel to West Ham on Saturday in the Premier League before hosting League Two side Barrow on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup. Surely, Acheampong is going to get a chance to impress.

The teenage defender made his first-team debut last season in a league match against Tottenham, which is his only competitive senior appearance to date.

If Maresca really does rate him so highly, now feels like the perfect opportunity to use him.
