Enzo Maresca could do something vs Liverpool no Chelsea manager has done since Frank Lampard

If Chelsea suffer defeat against Liverpool this weekend, Enzo Maresca could set an unwanted record that stretches back to Frank Lampard’s spell as caretaker manager.

Chelsea host Liverpool on Saturday evening in the Premier League, which is their final fixture before the October international break. The reality is that the pause will come at a good time because of the injury list piling up at Stamford Bridge.

On paper, Chelsea’s predicted line-up against Liverpool looks a little lightweight because they are without several key stars, including the likes of Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill.

The Blues go into the weekend in poor form, losing their previous two league matches against Brighton and Manchester United. It doesn’t get any easier when they host the table toppers and reigning champions.

Enzo Maresca could emulate unwanted Frank Lampard record at Chelsea

For Blues head coach Enzo Maresca, he must be desperate for a positive league result before the two-week break.

If Chelsea lose against Liverpool, it will be a third consecutive Premier League defeat. The last time that happened to them is when they lost four in a row during Frank Lampard‘s stint as the caretaker manager in April and May 2023.

Chelsea won their last game against Liverpool back in May, but it is worth noting that the Merseyside club had already wrapped up the title by then.

In terms of Chelsea’s recent league defeats, there are some extenuating circumstances to factor in. Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent off against Man Utd in the early stages at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, key defender Trevoh Chalobah collected a red card against Brighton to cost his side.

If Maresca’s side hope to get any kind of result against Liverpool, it is imperative that they keep 11 players on the pitch for the entire contest.

Frank Lampard rebuilding reputation at Coventry

Lampard is cemented in history as a Chelsea legend for his incredible playing career, where he achieved so much during 13 years at the Bridge. His record at coaching the club was a bit more hit and miss, though.

The Englishman coached the Blues between 2019 and 2021. Despite some success, particularly in overseeing the introduction of so many talented young players, he did eventually lose his job. As for his brief return as the caretaker boss in 2023, he was right up against it.

The exciting news is that Lampard has been a major hit since he became Coventry City boss in November 2024.

After losing in the Championship play-off last season, Coventry have started the 2025/26 campaign in very impressive form, scoring goals for fun as they sit in the automatic promotion spots.

We’re convinced that Lampard will soon get another crack back in the Premier League, whether that’s with Coventry or a different club.
