Enzo Maresca explains why Wesley Fofana isn’t in Chelsea’s squad for Conference League game

Wesley Fofana will miss the first leg of Chelsea’s Conference League play-off tie against Servette on Thursday.

Wesley Fofana is fit, with the central defender playing the entire 90 minutes of Chelsea‘s 2-0 defeat against Manchester City last Sunday.

It could give Tosin Adarabioyo the opportunity to make his debut for the club following his move from Fulham earlier this summer.

Enzo Maresca has several centre-back options, though the Italian could be about to lose one of them. It has been claimed that Newcastle United are interested in Axel Disasi.

Wesley Fofana out for Servette game

Fofana will not play against Servette on Thursday when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.

However, Chelsea supporters do not have anything to worry about, with Maresca telling reporters why he has left the 23-year-old out of his squad.

In his pre-match press conference, Maresca explained that he is just trying to manage Fofana’s minutes.

“Wes Fofana is out because he played the other day, so he can’t play Thursday,” Maresca said.

Fofana has a lot of people to win over this season. The Frenchman cost Chelsea a lot of money but has barely played for them because of injury. Steve Nicol has suggested that Fofana won’t be a success in west London.

Servette could be a big game for Tosin Adarabioyo

Starting both Fofana and Levi Colwill against the Premier League champions, that looks to be Maresca’s first-choice centre-back pairing.

It means that Adarabioyo may not get too many opportunities in the early part of this season, so if he gets one against Servette, then he needs to take it.

With Disasi and Benoit Badiashile also still at the club, they are two more centre-halves he has to compete against.

A poor performance against a side from the Swiss Super League could be really damaging for Adarabioyo.

Adarabioyo is a player whom Chelsea believe in, though, and he could now get his first chance to start paying back the faith they have put in him.
