Why Chelsea feel they’ve pulled off such a masterstroke with one summer signing

Chelsea have made a lot of signings this summer, but they seem really pleased with one of their additions.

Filip Jorgensen is the latest arrival at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea confirming his move on Tuesday.

Jorgensen grew up watching Chelsea, so that will put him on the good side of supporters. As well as the 22-year-old, the Blues have also brought in the likes of Renato Veiga, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Tosin Adarabioyo.

None of those players cost a fortune, with Dewsbury-Hall being the most expensive name there after Chelsea paid Leicester City £30m for his signature.

Adarabioyo, meanwhile, cost the Blues nothing after joining from west London rivals Fulham on a free transfer.

Chelsea’s view of Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo

Trevoh Chalobah looks set for a Chelsea exit this summer after being left out of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Chalobah has proposals from Premier League clubs, so a move to another English side is more than possible.

If he departs as expected, Chelsea will not have to worry about finding a replacement, having already brought in Adarabioyo.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, with the club needing to be wary of PSR, selling Chalobah and replacing him with free signing Adarabioyo is seen as such smart business internally.

On his Substack, he wrote: “They are trying to balance PSR, making profits, yet also trying to keep a big squad and players for the near and distant future.

“This is why we have seen the situation with Trevoh Chalobah, a player who represents pure profit. Replacing him with a free agent like Tosin Adarabioyo is seen as smart internally.”

Tosin Adarabioyo smart business

The fact that Chelsea signed Adarabioyo on a free transfer does make it a clever bit of business.

The former Fulham man is an experienced Premier League defender who Chelsea did not pay a single penny for.

He is a tall central defender who is very good in the air. As per FBref, Adarabioyo has ranked in the 88th percentile for aerials won among centre-backs over the last year.

Chelsea supporters are still going to be upset about Chalobah leaving the club, though. He has been at Chelsea his whole life, coming through their academy.

Smart signing or not, Adarabioyo will not stop Chelsea fans from being disgruntled about Chalobah’s current situation.
