Enzo Maresca has noticed something about Chelsea striker Marc Guiu in training this week

Chelsea supporters have been confused and angry about Marc Guiu’s situation so far this season.

Marc Guiu, 19, joined Premier League rivals Sunderland on a season-long loan in early August. After just three appearances for them, Chelsea opted to recall the teenage striker a few weeks later following an injury to Liam Delap.

It is admirable that Guiu reacted professionally to his Chelsea return, but the youngster must be frustrated that he’s not played a minute yet since his reintroduction to the squad. Even though the teenage centre-forward has been on the bench in four recent Blues matches, he’s yet to get on the pitch since coming back to Stamford Bridge.

Guiu can’t go on loan in January if he plays for Chelsea because FIFA rules restrict players to a maximum of two clubs per season.

Enzo Maresca impressed by Marc Guiu and will play him

On Friday morning, Blues head coach Enzo Maresca held his pre-match press conference for Saturday’s Premier League match at home to Liverpool, streamed via Chelsea’s official website.

He explained that Guiu has impressed him this week with his work on the training pitches at Cobham. On top of that, he insisted that the Spanish frontman will soon get opportunities to play matches.

Maresca said: “Marc is working well. This week, he has worked very, very good; much better compared to the first weeks when he came back. For sure, he’s going to get minutes with us. He’s going to play games.”

Despite theories that Guiu is being held back so he can be loaned out in January, Maresca is adamant he will get minutes for Chelsea. The sooner that happens, the better to clear up rumours regarding his future this season.

Reports claim that Maresca is a huge admirer of Guiu because of his intensity, but he’s overlooked him for the past month.

He scored six goals in 16 appearances across all competitions last season for Maresca’s Chelsea side, so he can definitely contribute to the squad. Hopefully, the manager is true to his word and starts to use the talented attacker.

Marc Guiu should play vs Liverpool

If he’s fit and available, we see no reason why Guiu shouldn’t be involved this weekend against Liverpool. The fact he’s impressed in training during the last few days should further his case, too!

Even though he is still a work in progress, he has the ability to run the channels and make the kind of intelligent movement you need from a striker leading the line.

If Guiu leads the line, Joao Pedro can drop a little deeper to thrive as a number 10. It is a much better solution than using Tyrique George as the centre-forward as well because the winger looks lost and isolated.
