Enzo Maresca has reportedly given one Chelsea player a bit of good news after a disappointing summer.

Several players were removed from Enzo Maresca‘s squad, with some no longer at Chelsea.

The above includes Raheem Sterling and Trevoh Chalobah, though they have only left the club on loan.

Ben Chilwell was another Chelsea player who was banished from Maresca’s group, but he remained at Stamford Bridge and is set to start training with the first team again.

Enzo Maresca hands Ben Chilwell lifeline

At one stage, Maresca had warned Chilwell that he would not get minutes if he stayed at Chelsea.

That may still be the case if Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga remain fit. However, according to journalist Simon Phillips, Maresca has now told Chilwell that he can at least compete with Chelsea’s first-choice left-back.

On Substack, he wrote: “Sources have also confirmed that Chilwell has been told by Enzo Maresca that he can now compete with Marc Cucurella again for the left back spot from now until a time that he might leave the club.”

While there was interest in him during the summer, Fabrizio Romano says Chilwell wasn’t going to join just anyone.

Ben Chilwell still likely to leave Chelsea

Whatever happens between now and January, Chilwell still looks set for a Chelsea exit. According to Phillips, the Blues still want to sell the 27-year-old.

Unless Cucurella and Veiga pick up serious injuries, then, you would expect Chilwell to depart Stamford Bridge in January.

He is too good of a footballer to miss a whole season. Chilwell will also have aspirations to get back into the England squad. That will not happen if he spends the rest of the campaign on Chelsea’s bench.

As well as Chilwell, Chelsea are also going to have to find a solution for Sterling at some point in the new year, with the winger only at Arsenal on a season-long loan.

Arsenal could decide to retain Sterling’s services, but if not, then Chelsea will have to find another buyer for the England international. With so many wide options currently at Stamford Bridge, there is no way back for him.
