Enzo Maresca sends warning to Chelsea owners about transfers

Enzo Maresca was only named as head coach at Chelsea after succeeding Mauricio Pochettino.

It means his sole responsibility at Chelsea will be coaching the team, while the club’s sporting directors focus on recruitment and transfers.

That being said, Enzo Maresca is still likely to have some say on the above and has a warning for the likes of Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.

The new Chelsea manager will probably be happy with the business the club have managed to do so far. For example, they have managed to bring in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, a player who he knows well after their time together at Leicester City.

Dewsbury-Hall is adapting well at Chelsea thanks to knowing Maresca and the rest of his coaching staff.

Enzo Maresca’s message to Chelsea board

While Maresca only has the title of head coach at Chelsea, he has sent a clear message to the club’s owners and directors that everyone has to be on the same wavelength.

Discussing the amount of control he has at Chelsea and the subject of transfers in an interview with ESPN, the Italian said: “For me, it’s quite an easy answer in terms of I think manager and club, they need to go in the same direction because if I go in different direction, it’s not good. If the club go in different direction of the manager, it’s not good.

“So it’s important that we all go in the same direction, so the owner, the sporting director, the manager, they all need to go in the same direction. So for me, it’s quite clear.”

Since his arrival, Chelsea have already made some big decisions, which includes leaving Trevoh Chalobah out of the club’s pre-season tour.

Chelsea need to back Enzo Maresca

Chelsea appointed Maresca on a five-year contract with the option of another 12 months.

While they do not have to sign off on every recommendation he makes, the club really need to listen to the man who they have chosen to be in their dugout.

Simply put, they need to back him, otherwise there would have been no point in handing him such a long deal.

In Maresca’s own words, if he is going in one direction and the club the other, then it is not good and then this becomes a relationship that will probably not last.

He has also spoken following Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham. In his post-match press conference, Maresca didn’t rule out Chelsea signing a goalkeeper before the transfer window closes.
