When Enzo Maresca made the move to Chelsea over the summer, he knew he would have a couple of familiar faces to help him get to grips with the squad.

From his time working at Manchester City the Italian has become well accustomed to both Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia, who were part of the development squad at the time.

He also had a brief experience working with one of their new signings too. It was claimed just before he joined that Tosin Adarabioyo was excited about working with Maresca at Chelsea.

Palmer has obviously gone on to become one of the best players in the Premier League, with many hoping for big things from him again this season.

Maresca has claimed though that he was more than aware of his abilities from when he was just a youngster at City.

Maresca knew Palmer would be a star

He told Men in Blazers: “There is a good player. You can see it clearly. You can see that with Cole, Romeo [Lavia], immediately you can realise they are good players. These kind of players make difficult things look easy.”

The position Palmer is going to pick up on the pitch next season remains to be seen. He did a lot of his good work last season playing with freedom on the right of attack.

Palmer back at Cobham

However, there may be an appetite to use him in a more central role next season, allowing natural wingers to be given the chance to express themselves out wide.

This could be a real benefit for Noni Madueke, who found the net in his last three pre-season friendlies over in the United States, as he pushes for more minutes this season.

While he didn’t join the rest of the squad across the pond, Palmer has returned to Cobham to continue his work in order to be ready for the opening day clash against his former side.
