The Chelsea first team squad are currently making their way back to England after the pre-season tour of the United States concluded last night.

A 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid brought to an end a pretty underwhelming set of friendlies for the Blues, who are clearly seeing some teething problems when it comes to Enzo Maresca’s system.

A number of individuals have taken the opportunity to prove themselves to the new manager. Maresca highlighted Christopher Nkunku for praise after he started every single game this summer.

The Frenchman featured all over the attack in those games, with him looking a surefire bet to start the Premier League opener against Manchester City.

One player who will no doubt be there too is Cole Palmer, despite the fact he did not fly out to America with the rest of the squad after his extended European Championships campaign.

Cole Palmer back at Cobham

His pre-season has not been wasted though. Palmer has been spotted doing gym work on his own to prepare for the return of domestic club football.

The England international has now taken to his own Instagram to show that he is back at Cobham, where he will be joining up again with his teammates too.

He simply said: “Back to it.”

One player he will probably bump into there is Marc Cucurella, who made his return a few days ago to the club’s training base.

Big things expected from Palmer at Chelsea this season

Chelsea fans will be hoping that the £45m signing from 12 months ago can replicate some of his form from last season, where he was a contender for the best player in the entire campaign.

His position on the pitch is something that remains unknown going into the new season.

He did a lot of his good work from the right wing last season, however there may be an appetite to get the best out of his skills in a central role.

This could give Noni Madueke the chance to impress, which would no doubt be deserved based on his recent displays in pre-season.
