ESPN pundit critical of 22-year-old Chelsea player who looks unrecognisable from last season

Craig Burley suggests that Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo looks unrecognisable from his form at Brighton last season.

Moises Caicedo, 22, was a monster in the Premier League during the 2022/23 campaign.

It’s what led to Chelsea paying Brighton a mega £115million transfer fee (Sky Sports) for the midfielder in the summer window.

He’s now made 16 Blues appearances this season since arriving at Stamford Bridge, but we concede that fans are still waiting to see his best version across a whole 90 minute performance.

Craig Burley not impressed

ESPN pundit Burley was left full of disappointment when discussing Caicedo after Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United last night. It was a game at Old Trafford that the defensive midfielder couldn’t get any grip on.

Burley told ESPN: “We go to Caicedo and is it the make up of the team? Let’s get these players and chuck them all together and spend a billion. He was absolutely superb at Brighton. Him and [Alexis] Mac Allister were different gravy. He goes in here and it’s been a really tough start.”

The best Moises Caicedo is yet to turn up at Chelsea

Caicedo definitely doesn’t look like a £100million-plus player right now. You could say the same about midfield partner Enzo Fernandez next to him, too. Speaking via Prime Video yesterday, Ally McCoist said he was disappointed by both Caicedo and Fernandez against Man United.

Caicedo is operating as the deep-lying midfielder in the Blues XI, where we see glimpses of his technique on the ball and ability to break up play.

However, the South American star is sloppy with his passsing at times. Also, the fact that he’s not playing in a box-to-box role, something he does so effectively, means he’s limited in a sense with work off the ball.

Our guess is we’ll see him shine further forward once Romeo Lavia is fit and ready to anchor the side as the No 6.
