Estevao Willian reveals the one thing he’s been trying to avoid after joining Chelsea

Estevao Willian has been discussing in an interview his impressive start to life at Chelsea.

So far this season, Estevao Willian, who’s still only 18, has caught the eye for Chelsea in the Premier League. The teenage right-winger has played in all three league matches, starting two of them, and looks mature beyond his years.

Marc Cucurella has been impressed by Blues teammate Estevao, who’s quickly become a bit of a fan favourite around Stamford Bridge.

Even though he’s still waiting for his first official Chelsea goal, Estevao just created Brazilian history by scoring for Brazil against Chile during the international break.

Estevao Willian reveals he’s trying to avoid contact on the pitch

Without a doubt, the biggest question mark regarding Estevao coming to the Premier League was around how he would cope with the physicality. However, we’ve been pleasantly surprised to see him more than hold his own so far.

The Chelsea attacker has explained that he tries to avoid contact with opponents. While he’s keen to add a bit more muscle, it’s not seen as imperative.

When asked by Globo if he’s felt the need to get stronger after his first few games at Chelsea, Estevao said: “No, because I know how to avoid contact a lot, I try to avoid it a lot, right? Because the player ends up going at high speed, and the players there are much stronger, they’re faster too…

“Of course, it’s important to gain muscle strength, to gain mass, but I see it as… it’s important, but not fundamental. But I want to further improve my speed, my playing style, because thank God I’m getting the opportunity, I’m able to play well the way I am, light, calm, but knowing that I have a lot to improve too.”

Estevao’s agility makes him a nightmare for any defender, regardless of their size. We think he’s stronger and quicker than most people realise, too.

Estevao admits he’s settled extremely quickly at Chelsea, which you can tell with the way he’s playing.

Chelsea can rotate wingers so easily

All of a sudden, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has the luxury to have a batch of really exciting wingers at the club.

It looks like Estevao and Pedro Neto are the two starting wide men right now. However, we expect plenty of rotation between them and Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Tyrique George during the weeks ahead.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see Estevao on the bench this Saturday for the league trip to Brentford because Brazil play Bolivia in the early hours of Wednesday morning. However, that could allow the South American rising star to return to the starting XI a few days later for the mouth-watering trip to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
