After his first season in a Chelsea shirt, Estevao Willian has shown steel by overriding a major medical directive backed heavily by the club’s hierarchy.

Estevao Willian‘s dream of representing Brazil at the 2026 World Cup was cruelly shattered following a devastating injury setback during the final weeks of Chelsea‘s season.

The 19-year-old had enjoyed a spectacular, breakout debut campaign at Stamford Bridge, scoring eight goals across 36 appearances and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.

However, his momentum ground to a sudden halt in April during a Premier League clash against Manchester United. Stretching for the ball, Estevao suffered a grade-four tear of his hamstring. The injury sidelined him for Chelsea’s remaining fixtures and left him unable to prove his fitness.

Consequently, Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti omitted Estevao from the Selecao’s final World Cup squad, despite picking an injured Neymar.

Estevao Willian ignores advice to get hamstring surgery

In an interview with geglobo, Estevao Willian has opened up on his injury situation, where he shared that he went against the advice of the Chelsea owners, who told him to get surgery.

“I had an injury where I tore 80% of my hamstring, and the Chelsea doctors wanted me to have surgery; even the Chelsea owner said he wanted me to have surgery.

“But together with my parents, and I always say that it’s very important to have the people you love by your side because it’s very difficult to make these decisions alone, because you’re surrounded by a lot of pressure and other things, I chose not to have surgery.

“It’s a procedure that will take time. God is in control.”

Estevao Willian injury update

In the same interview, Estevao had some positive news for Chelsea fans on his recovery from the hamstring injury, ahead of pre-season with Xabi Alonso.

“Two weeks ago, I had my second MRI, and the doctor asked if I was in pain or if anything was wrong. And I said, “No, doctor, I’m super relaxed; I think I can even play again now” (laughs). And he said, “Yeah, it’s very noticeable.

“He showed me the image from the exam and said he didn’t see any more lesions. He said he doesn’t know what happened because, at this stage, it shouldn’t be so well-structured as it is. He said he didn’t even know why the doctors wanted me to have surgery.”
