Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea ‘not happy’ with latest conversations with manager candidate

Chelsea have cooled their interest in former Spain manager Luis Enrique following recent conversations between the two parties, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Previously, The Telegraph reported that Enrique is no longer among the favourites to become Chelsea’s next permanent manager.

Instead, the Blues are expected to hold further talks with former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, as well as Mauricio Pochettino, whom Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali had considered before they appointed Graham Potter earlier this season.

Romano claims that this development was a result of the recent not-so-positive talks between Chelsea and Enrique.

“Chelsea have cooled their interest in Enrique as a head coach for the next season,” the Italian journalist said on his YouTube channel.

“We know they had many conversations [with manager candidates] but Enrique and Nagelsmann were the main ones.

“This is why Enrique was in England some days ago together with his agent to speak with Chelsea.

“The initial conversation was positive but nothing was agreed.

“What happened is that in the last round of talks they had with Enrique, Chelsea were not so happy with some of the points.

“The conversation between Chelsea and Enrique is on standby, while they continue [to talk] to Nagelsmann.”

Romano did not explain the points that Chelsea were not happy with but mentioned that Enrique will unlikely have plenty of other options, amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur and several national teams.

For now, Chelsea are said to have yet to make any final decision but are trying to trim their shortlist.

If they were to appoint Nagelsmann, the west London club would likely have to enter negotiations with Bayern, with whom the young manager is still contractually tied until 2026.

Bayern and Thomas Tuchel’s interest in Chelsea coach Anthony Barry could prove important in the possible negotiations between the two parties.
