Ian Wright believes everyone at Arsenal will be surprised by Kai Havertz’s quality following his arrival from Chelsea.

Kai Havertz, who spent three years as a Chelsea player, completed a £65million (Sky Sports) transfer during this summer window to rivals Arsenal.

The Germany international is an extremely highly-rated talent with some big individual moments in his career to date, including scoring the winner in a Champions League final for Chelsea a couple of years ago.

However, there was always a feeling at Stamford Bridge that the 24-year-old was playing within himself.

Perhaps the biggest issue surrounding him is choosing his preferred position. We’ve seen him play as a striker, false-nine, winger, No 10 and attacking midfielder in his career to date.

Ian Wright is absolutely delighted to see his former club Arsenal sign Havertz for next season.

It’s interesting to hear him note on Wrighty’s House podcast that he can picture the German playing in a No 8 position for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Effectively, that would see him replace Granit Xhaka at the Emirates Stadium as a box-to-box midfielder that is heavily involved going forward.

When discussing Arsenal’s new signings, Wright said: “I feel very, very confident about that midfield and what that midfield can produce.

“Especially with Havertz. Havertz in that role, I think we are going to be very surprised in his quality as well.

“Arsenal fans are going to love him, we haven’t seen nothing from him at Chelsea. Yes, he’s scored the winning goal in a Champions League final and stuff like that.

“But, he’s not a [number] nine, he’s not a false nine. He’s either a ten drifting in like he did for [Bayer] Leverkusen, scoring lots of goals in his first couple of seasons. But I can see him as an eight.”

Havertz is no longer Chelsea’s issue following his transfer exit, but we’ll enjoy keeping one eye on how he fares across London.

We’re in the camp that we won’t be surprised if the Germany playmaker does do well in Arsenal colours.

Not many have doubted his individual quality on the ball or his potential, but he just couldn’t find any consistency or the right system at Chelsea to live up to the hype.

Paul Merson has called Havertz one of the “top-class players” to leave Chelsea already this summer (Sportskeeda).
