Marcos Alonso has been slammed by BarcaUniversal for his display at centre-back for Barcelona against Bayern Munich last night.

The Catalan side crashed out of the Champions League group stage for the second consecutive year.

A 2-0 loss to Bayern didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, with them already being dumped out following Inter Milan’s win.

This is despite going to desperate lengths to bring in a whole host of players this summer.

The club activated a number of financial levers to secure the money required to make a number of signings, much to Chelsea’s demise.

After the Blues agreed a deal to sign Brazilian winger Raphinha from Leeds United, the player dug his heels in for a number of days until the La Liga side could stump up the finances to bring him in.

The forward has seemingly been struggling however, especially in performances in this competition. He was only a substitute last night.

Barcelona also beat Chelsea to the signature of defender Jules Kounde, after he was widely expected to move to Stamford Bridge.

Whilst he struggled at the back last night, it was Alonso whose performance grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

BarcaUniversal were particularly critical, saying he shouldn’t feature in this new position again.

They said: “4/10. Way too flimsy under pressure; should not continue at centre-back for Barcelona.”

In his six years at Stamford Bridge, it’s hard to remember an example of when the 31-year-old has featured in this position.

With his defensive abilities paling in comparison to what he brings going forwards, the decision to play him at centre-back seems a strange one from Xavi.

While Barcelona have to look ahead to another season in the Europa League, Chelsea have the luxury of qualifying top of their own group already, after three consecutive wins in the hardest trio of games.
