‘Focal point’… ESPN pundit suggests £40m player is now the main man at Chelsea

Chelsea have made so many big signings in the last few transfer windows, including the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Raheem Sterling.

They also spent huge money in the summer to bring in Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion.

However, former USA international Janusz Michallik has suggested on ESPN FC that Cole Palmer is Chelsea‘s main man right now.

The 21-yea-old has been excellent for the Blues since arriving from Manchester City in a £40m deal, as reported by Sky Sports. In eight Premier League appearances under Mauricio Pochettino, he has scored three goals and provided two assists.

Michallik thinks Palmer has now become the focal point of this Chelsea team.

Speaking on ESPN FC, he said: “It was a good move for him because he’s become a little bit of a focal point, the type of player that the Chelsea midfield, the sort of way he plays right now, desperately needed. They’ve been strong and physical enough in that midfield, but the creativity was missing.”

Chelsea were missing a player like Cole Palmer

After selling Mason Mount to Manchester United, Chelsea definitely had to go out and buy someone like Palmer.

They needed someone who could play as a No.10 but also capable of dropping deep into midfield and bringing some life into that area of the pitch.

Palmer can do that and those are the sort of positions he has been taking up on the pitch despite starting some games as a right winger.

Chelsea need the England U21 international to maintain his form as they look to close the gap with the top six.

It is a gap that could get bigger after this weekend, though, with Pochettino’s men taking on Palmer’s former side City.

It will not be an easy game. Palmer, who has surprised Danny Murphy with his performances this season, and his teammates will have to be at their best. If they are not, it could end up being a long afternoon for Chelsea, who at least go into the game with some momentum after defeating London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
