Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea would have tried to sign a player like Timo Werner this month, but his history at Stamford Bridge made that impossible.
Timo Werner, 27, is back in the Premier League after joining Tottenham in January on a short-term loan deal from RB Leipzig.
Chelsea fans know the German forward very well from the two seasons he previously spent in West London, making 89 appearances for the club in total.
We saw glimpses of true quality from the rapid attacker, particularly during the club’s run to winning the Champions League in 2021, but his exit in the summer of 2022 wasn’t met with much disappointment. Ultimately, he couldn’t be the clinical frontman that Chelsea continue to search for to this day.

Paul Merson thinks that Werner’s loan move to the Premier League is the type of deal Chelsea would jump at now, of course, if it was a different player.
Merson told Sportskeeda: “This is probably a funny thing to say, but if Timo Werner didn’t previously play for Chelsea, I think snapping him up on loan would’ve been something the club would have considered in January. Much like Arsenal, they need a bonafide goalscorer and I wouldn’t be surprised if they manage to sign someone this month.”
Incidentally, speaking via talkSPORT this week, Jamie O’Hara insisted that Werner would walk straight into Chelsea’s XI right now. We can’t imagine it, though!
Chelsea need a striker
It’s no secret that the Blues are crying out for a new prolific No 9, which is why several individuals are linked in the transfer rumour mill.
However, if the right profile is not available during the remainder of January, we’d rather wait until a longer transfer window in the summer.
A short-term loan for a temporary strike could be worth a low-risk punt if someone with Premier League experience and a proven record enters the market.
