Former Chelsea defender and captain Gary Cahill is a fan of Levi Colwill.

However, he has not had the opportunity to watch Colwill play this term because of an ACL injury that the 23-year-old picked up before the start of the season.

Chelsea are being cautious with Colwill, but there is hope that he could feature for the first team before the campaign concludes.

Gary Cahill backs Levi Colwill to have good 2026/27 campaign

This season will have to be a write-off for Colwill, but Cahill is expecting things to go much differently next term.

The retired England international is quite confident that Colwill is going to have a solid 2026/27 campaign.

In an interview with The Standard, Cahill said: “The injury was a blow, full stop. He was the first name on the team-sheet for Chelsea in terms of defensive positions, still a young boy.

“But age is on his side. He will come back stronger. It’s great to see him coming back and next season I’m sure will be a good season for Levi.”

While Colwill has been playing with Chelsea’s Under-21 side, he still may not be ready for first-team action. Considering that, Calum McFarlane will have to continue using the likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Both men started in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final last Sunday, with Adarabioyo playing well in particular.

The decision to start Adarabioyo really paid off, as the 28-year-old was able to neutralise the aerial threat of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Chelsea’s next manager will build around Levi Colwill

Liam Rosenior never got a proper chance to work with Colwill, but Chelsea’s next manager will. Whoever that is, he is very likely to make Colwill a key part of his defence.

The Blues have been linked with modern-day managers who want their team to pass out from defence. Colwill is excellent at that, which is why his injury has been such a big blow for Chelsea.

In terms of who Colwill’s next head coach could be, talk about Xabi Alonso joining the Club World Cup winners is intensifying.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Alonso is edging towards becoming the main candidate for the Chelsea job, so that is something to keep an eye on.
