Gary Lineker has singled out one Chelsea player he’s noticed has gradually been getting better and better.
If you look at how young the Chelsea squad is, it’s quite obvious that they need time to develop as a group, as the majority of them are nowhere near their prime years yet.
Paul Merson wants Chelsea to sign more experience to help them kick on again next season. However, the Blues have added more young talent with the likes of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens so far this summer.

Gary Lineker claims Levi Colwill is on the rise
During a conversation on The Rest Is Football, Gary Lineker delivered high praise for Chelsea’s Levi Colwill because he’s spotted real improvement in his game.
The 22-year-old centre-half has been one of the first names on the team sheet under Enzo Maresca, playing 42 games across all competitions in the 2024/25 season. We agree that he’s found a purple patch of form in the last few months.
When discussing Chelsea star Colwill, Lineker said: “I think you can see gradual progress. I think he was a little bit raw in his early days. I think he’s improving. It’s obviously an area of the team with England that is very important. Unfortunately, he’s going to miss this semi-final [due to] suspension.”
Back in May, Micah Richards highlighted Colwill’s improvement after watching him step up as a key figure in the Blues defence.
The central defender, who has five senior England caps, is the first-choice centre-back at Chelsea.
He’s certainly come to the fore during his club’s run of 12 wins in their previous 14 games across all competitions. It’s why he could be a big loss when he’s suspended for the Club World Cup semi-final clash against Fluminense.
Maresca has claimed Colwill is getting better as he starts to live up to the hype he received when he was in the Blues academy.

Gary Lineker’s prediction about Levi Colwill nearly two years ago
Back in September 2023, Lineker predicted Colwill would become an England international. He said: “We have Colwill who looks like he will hopefully fill a bit of a void for England.”
While the Chelsea youngster has played five times for the national side, he’s still waiting to really cement his spot in the Three Lions line-up.
With the 2026 World Cup looming, Colwill should be firmly in the England picture if he can keep up his recent Chelsea form. The fact he’ll get the opportunity to impress in next season’s Champions League is an extra bonus in his favour, too.
