Gary Neville claims Chelsea can win Premier League title if they replace £100k-a-week player

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has made a big claim about Chelsea following their 2-1 loss against Liverpool over the weekend.

While Chelsea were unable to take any points back to Stamford Bridge, it was a game that they played well in.

In fact, Enzo Maresca‘s men dominated a lot of the stats. For example, the Blues had more possession, more shots and more touches in the box than their opponents.

Neville was clearly convinced by Chelsea’s performance despite the team losing, claiming that they could potentially win the title in a few years’ time if they replace one of their current starters. As for this season, Neville thinks Chelsea will finish in the top four.

Gary Neville reluctant to criticise Nicolas Jackson

With Nicolas Jackson scoring at Anfield and on five goals for the season in the Premier League, Neville was unwilling to criticise him after the Liverpool game.

However, the Sky Sports pundit believes that if Chelsea sign a world-class striker to replace him in the starting XI, they will have a team that is capable of winning the Premier League title.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, he said: “I don’t want to really call out Nicolas Jackson, I think he can be part of a very successful squad that can do well for Chelsea.

“I just think if they had a world-class striker in front of him, he was, say, the second striker, that would more align with the team that could go on and potentially win the title in a few years’ time and catch Liverpool up.”

For former West Ham United midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, the only thing Jackson is missing is composure in front of goal.

Chelsea have much bigger issues than Nicolas Jackson

Right now, Jackson is not a problem for Chelsea. The Senegal international, who is on a £100,000-a-week contract (via Spotrac), is scoring goals for his team.

At 23, Jackson also has plenty of time to improve. Ultimately, with the path that he is on, there is no reason why the former Villarreal man cannot develop into that world-class striker that Neville claims Chelsea need.

Instead, the errors that Robert Sanchez is making in goal and Enzo Fernandez’s struggles are bigger issues for Maresca.

Sanchez is not always the most reliable goalkeeper because of his poor distribution, while Fernandez, a £100m midfielder, was dropped for one of Chelsea’s biggest games of the season. That is what Chelsea have to worry about now and going forward, not Jackson.
