Graeme Souness criticises ‘bad bit of business’ from Chelsea in the summer transfer window

Graeme Souness has fired criticism at Chelsea for one thing they did in the recent summer transfer window.

Chelsea’s owners have come under-fire for plenty of criticism during a turbulent couple of years at the helm of the club. In particular, the transfer strategy at Stamford Bridge in recent windows has been chaotic and difficult for supporters to keep pace with.

It was another busy summer recently for the Blues with a huge turnover of the squad, so there were plenty of incomings and outgoings.

Speaking via ESPN in the summer, Enzo Maresca stressed him and Chelsea’s owners must be on the same wavelength, particularly when it comes to transfers. We’ll only see in the coming months if it was a successful summer window, though.

Graeme Souness disagrees with Chelsea letting Raheem Sterling leave

Graeme Souness has delivered a pretty damning verdict on Chelsea allowing Raheem Sterling to exit in the summer to join London rivals Arsenal.

The 29-year-old winger completed a move to the Emirates Stadium on a season-long loan. At the same time, Jadon Sancho arrived at Stamford Bridge on loan from Manchester United.

When discussing Sterling leaving Chelsea to join Arsenal, Souness said on Up Front: “It’s just a bad bit of business for them (Chelsea)… I’ve been critical of Chelsea’s spending and the direction of the football club… I think they’re creating a monster for themselves. These players will go for next-to-nothing, and they’ll pay them to go. He’s (Sancho) not as good as Sterling.”

Should Chelsea have kept Raheem Sterling?

It’s fair to comment that Sterling hardly set the world alight in Chelsea colours. We’ve definitely not seen the fast winger reach anywhere near his peak levels during two seasons at Stamford Bridge, although he’s still contributed in moments.

The decision to ship Sterling out on loan to Arsenal does feel a little strange, especially because he’s got the potential to improve them if he adapts under Mikel Arteta. However, Chelsea’s focus is on a younger crop of wingers at their disposal.

There’s a lot of exciting options in wide areas for the Blues with the likes of Sancho, Pedro Neto, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke.
