Graeme Souness rates Chelsea’s chances of beating Liverpool in EFL Cup final

Graeme Souness has made his pre-match prediction ahead of the EFL Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool this weekend.

Chelsea face rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon at Wembley Stadium in the Carabao Cup final, with the first piece of silverware in 2024 up for grabs.

For the Blues, it feels like most of the campaign rests on this next result because of their poor league form. It’s a chance for head coach Mauricio Pochettino to finally win a trophy as a manager in England.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are firmly in the title picture as league leaders, so you’d put them as favourites in the cup final this weekend. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is aiming to bow out of Anfield in style after announcing he’s leaving at the end of the season.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness is backing his former club to beat Chelsea at Wembley. He’s rating it a 60/40 game, though.

When asked if Pochettino could win silverware this weekend, Souness told talkSPORT: “No. What do you expect me to say? I’m a Liverpool supporter.

“It’s not a done deal. Of course, they have a chance. For me, it’s a 60/40 game. I think Liverpool will win.

“That’s even without the boys who went off injured. That’s my one concern for Liverpool.

“They’ve got an abundance of strikers and even guys that change games when they’re not playing well.”

Chelsea vs Liverpool

Chelsea and Liverpool games have been very tight in the last few years, but the latter ripped up the script during the most recent meeting.

Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat away to Liverpool at the end of January should still be fresh in the minds of both sets of players. Of course, it’s a clean slate and a cup final will bring a different kind of pressure.

The Blues can be buoyed by some recent performances and results, winning away at both Crystal Palace and Aston Villa earlier this month. Plus, Pochettino’s side earned a well-deserved 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Saturday.

Liverpool’s fear ahead of Sunday is their pile up of injuries. The Telegraph reports that Diogo Jota is another Reds star unavailable to play the Carabao Cup final.

However, there should be no sympathy from a Chelsea group that has been decimated by injuries throughout the season.
