Graham Potter has been speaking about Chelsea’s unforgettable transfer window back in January 2023.
Chelsea’s owners showed they meant business after making a host of signings, including Enzo Fernandez.
Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali smashed the club’s transfer record to bring in Fernandez, while a lot of money was also spent on Mykhailo Mudryk.
Despite their arrivals, Chelsea still struggled in the Premier League and Potter was eventually sacked.

Graham Potter knew Chelsea were not guaranteed success
Fernandez arrived at Chelsea as a £100m midfielder who had just won the World Cup, while Mudryk was one of the most exciting young players at the time.
Nevertheless, Potter knew that the duo and Chelsea’s other January signings would not guarantee success and warned Boehly and co just that.
Speaking about Chelsea’s 2023 winter transfer window on High Performance, the 49-year-old said: “At the end of the day, you’re the owner. You’re the guy that’s responsible for the football club. If you want to do this, then my job is to support it.
“So I tried to do that with the owners, had the conversation around, ‘Look, if you do spend this money, you might have to overpay, there are no guarantees that it’s going to improve because the profile of the players you’re going to buy and you might have to get some players out’. They didn’t do that [get players out].”
This is not the first time that Potter has had the chance to discuss his former club this season. Potter spoke about Robert Sanchez earlier this month and other talking points from Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
What Graham Potter has said about Moises Caicedo
Potter was not at Chelsea when the Blues signed Moises Caicedo, with the midfielder arriving at Stamford Bridge last summer.
However, he managed Caicedo at Brighton & Hove Albion and has seen plenty of him this season. And like most, Potter has been impressed with the 23-year-old’s performances.
Potter spoke about Caicedo at the start of the month following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United and said: “Now you’re seeing the quality that he has.”
If Potter had an in-form Caicedo in his ranks, perhaps he would have fared much better at Chelsea.
In the end, though, taking Chelsea into the bottom half of the table, Potter cannot have too many complaints about his dismissal.
Fast forward to now, and Maresca has Chelsea in third place and just one point behind Manchester City. Champions League qualification has to be the bare minimum for the Italian’s side.
