Former Chelsea player Gus Poyet has been speaking about some of the Blues’ recent signings.
Chelsea bought both Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo in the last transfer window, and while Gus Poyet has not been too impressed with the latter, he has liked what he has seen from the former so far.
The Greece manager praised Palmer on talkSPORT (19/12/2023 at 08:13) for his mentality and strength, suggesting that his impact has been the polar opposite to that of Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez‘s.
The 21-year-old was on the scoresheet once again over the weekend, netting in Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Sheffield United.
They signed him from Manchester City on deadline day in a £40m deal (Sky Sports).
Gus Poyet hails Cole Palmer
Poyet has praised Palmer for being able to deliver on the pitch, believing that too many excuses are made for young players who struggle to do the same.
On the England international, he said: “Now Cole Palmer is the opposite [of Caicedo and Fernandez]. One of the things that’s interesting is that there are too many excuses when they’re young. Palmer is young, he doesn’t have any problems, the mentality, the strength, the quality to go out and perform and take risks and be one of the most consistent players.
“So, I think it’s a working process. Obviously, the coach [Mauricio] Pochettino needs a little bit of time because it’s all new. But, they need to show that they’re getting better and the way to do that is to get yourself in a semi-final.”

Cole Palmer’s mentality
Ian Maatsen recently described Palmer as “the coldest man” and it is not hard to understand why.
He has been so cool from the penalty spot for Chelsea this season, scoring all four of his penalties, including a last-minute one against his former club City.
It really does show how elite Palmer’s mentality is. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, nothing has fazed him.
He has really delivered and hopefully Caicedo and Fernandez can follow suit now. A lot of money was spent on them and we have not seen the two South Americans at their best yet.
