‘Hasn’t worked out’… Jason Cundy thinks record-breaking Chelsea signing has been a failure

Chelsea have not been afraid in recent years to spend big money on players they can transform their team.

In the last two years the Blues have smashed their transfer record twice to bring in Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, with both players starting the first two games of the new season.

Spending money has not only been a part of the Todd Boehly era at Stamford Bridge, with them not afraid to spend big money in the preceding seasons either.

They have even been prepared to spend record-breaking fees for players in their position, with them spending the most money on a goalkeeper to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa is set for a move to Bournemouth, with him not being in the plans at all at Chelsea for the upcoming season.

Jason Cundy thinks Kepa Arrizabalaga signing has failed for Chelsea

Jason Cundy believes the signing as a whole has been a failure despite the large fee they spent on the Spaniard.

He said to TalkSPORT: “He has worked with the manager before, hasn’t he? It hasn’t quite worked out. Most expensive goalkeeper in the world at one time. Hasn’t worked out for him.”

It was reported that Enzo Maresca had banished Kepa to the reserves upon his arrival at the club, with there clearly no future for him at Stamford Bridge.

It was believed he was holding out for a return to Real Madrid, where he would have been happy to sit on the bench for the foreseeable future.

Robert Sanchez is Chelsea’s Premier League goalkeeper

The goalkeeper situation right now at Chelsea got some clarity when Maresca confirmed that Robert Sanchez was his Premier League option at the moment.

This means Filip Jorgensen is forced to try and earn his place in the cup games, with the next opportunity coming in the Conference League qualifier second leg against Servette.

They have addressed the situation in the long-term too, with Mike Penders being signed as a future investment.
