Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick couldn’t resist praising opposition player Cole Palmer after his side’s humbling defeat at Chelsea last night.

Championship club Middlesbrough enjoyed a fantastic run in this season’s Carabao Cup competition, reaching the semi-final phase. In fact, they led 1-0 on aggregate against Chelsea after the first leg of the semis.

However, the Blues qualified for the League Cup final yesterday by thrashing Boro 6-1 at Stamford Bridge in the second leg.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will find out tonight if they’ll play Fulham or Liverpool in next month’s final at Wembley Stadium.

Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer, 21, made a key contribution during his side’s emphatic victory on Tuesday.

The left-footed playmaker scored his 10th and 11th goal in Chelsea colours to rubberstamp a great display, something we’ve seen so often from him this season.

It’s a credit to the England international that even the opposition manager was hailing him post-match.

When discussing Chelsea’s Palmer, Carrick told BBC Radio 5 Live: “He is a real talent. Nice lad as well. Down to Earth and you can see when you come up against him he will go on to have a great career.

“It’s not nice when you are on the end of it but we can appreciate and respect how good he is.”

Palmer’s rise at Chelsea is showing no signs of slowing down this campaign.

In our view, he’s now making himself a certainty for Gareth Southgate’s England squad this summer at Euro 2024.

He produced two very composed finishes against Boro in front of goal, which sort of summarises how effortlessly he plays the game.

Speaking via Sky Sports after last night’s win, Chelsea head coach Pochettino waxed lyrical about Palmer by describing him as an “amazing talent”.

We’re confident in saying that his £40 million signing (Sky Sports) from Manchester City last summer is the best deal in the Premier League this season.
