Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger opened up about how the club approached him in regards to Timo Werner’s transfer.
The centre-back has previously spoken about his role in Chelsea’s successful attempt to sign Werner.
“Of course then I did my bit, what I had to do,” he told Chelsea’s official website a few days ago.
But now he also added some details as he revealed that the Blues requested his input about his former Stuttgart teammate.
Rudiger told German outlet SportBild: “Chelsea asked me for an assessment.
“I have known Timo for a long time. I made a clear recommendation to do everything possible to get him.
“From the next season on he will have to deliver, otherwise I will get trouble from the club afterwards.”
Rudiger insisted Chelsea are an ideal destination for his Germany teammate as he argued it would be harder to play counter-attacking football with Bayern Munich or in the Serie A.
He said: “Although he [Werner] is not a classic penalty area striker, he has a certain robustness well suited to the toughness of English football.
“Even outside the group of top clubs, many teams try to play positive and attacking football against us.
“This will give him the space he needs and hopefully he can use it as much as he did at Leipzig.”
Chelsea announced the transfer last week and the 24-year-old is expected to join Frank Lampard’s squad in July.
