TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan thinks Mauricio Pochettino will improve Chelsea but not to the point that they become serial winners again.
Recent reports suggest that the Blues are in advanced talks with Pochettino over taking over as their next permanent manager.
There are reportedly still a couple of other names on Chelsea’s shortlist, including Burnley’s Vincent Kompany, but it is easy to see why the Argentine is the favourite.
Jordan, however, was baffled by Chelsea’s decision-making process.
“I was under the impression that Chelsea wanted to be winners, not contenders,” Jordan told talkSPORT about Pochettino’s being Blues leading candidate manager.
“If you want to be contenders, fantastic, Pochettino is your man.
“No doubt about it, you’ve got good enough playing squad there, you get a centre-forward in, and you’d be fine.
“I thought they wanted to be winners, that’s where I differ.
“Pochettino will be better than [Graham] Potter because he’s used to managing at a certain end of the pyramid.
“But will he win anything with Chelsea? I don’t think so.”
Pochettino’s only silverware as a manager are the three trophies he won during his spell at Paris Saint-Germain, where they were expected to win these competitions.
It is there understandable that many still have reservations about his capability as a manager.
That said, he has a proven track record in rebuilding a squad at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
At this point, this is arguably more important for Chelsea than a manager’s winning record.
Even if Pochettino proves incapable of getting Chelsea to podiums, it will still be a success for the club if they manage a build solid foundation in the next couple of years.
