‘I understand’… How Jose Mourinho feels about the possibility of becoming Chelsea manager again

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino does not look close to the sack.

In fact, he has probably given Chelsea more reason to retain his services after their penalty shootout win against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup yesterday. However, if Mauricio Pochettino were to leave Stamford Bridge, it looks like one former Blues boss would be more than open to a return to the club.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Jose Mourinho would relish the opportunity to manage Chelsea again. He wrote on his Substack “I understand” Mourinho would be “very keen” on coming back to the Blues.

The 60-year-old’s contract at AS Roma expires at the end of the season, so he could be on the move soon.

A lot still needs to happen, though, if the Champions League-winning coach is to return to west London for a third spell as Chelsea manager.

Should Chelsea replace Mauricio Pochettino with Jose Mourinho?

Chelsea are not in a position yet where they need to consider replacing Pochettino.

Is their Premier League campaign going to plan? Of course not, but Pochettino is still a top coach and the Blues have had some good games under him so far.

Four points from matches against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, for example, show that his team can go head-to-head with the country’s best in a one-off game.

What the Argentine now needs to do is get Chelsea beating the lesser teams in the Premier League, the ones who use a deep block. That and injuries have been their undoing this season, with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez one of their latest casualties.

All in all, then, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital should not be thinking about replacing Pochettino with Mourinho.

Anything can happen, especially with this football club, but it would be a shock if Mourinho got a third spell at Stamford Bridge and at Pochettino’s expense.
