‘I watched it’: Joe Cole says 23-year-old Chelsea star is now one of his son’s favourite players

Joe Cole has revealed that Chelsea forward Mason Mount is one of the son’s most beloved players.

Writing for The Telegraph, Cole admitted that the Stamford Bridge star has a special place in his youngest child’s heart.

A heart that must’ve been broken when he watched Mount wave goodbye to the World Cup on Saturday.

The forward was unable to prevent England from facing defeat the hands of the French in the quarter-final on the weekend.

A long-range strike from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud’s late header was enough to push the reigning champions into the semi-final.

Yet, the outcome of the result could’ve been entirely different had Harry Kane not misfired from the penalty spot.

Harry Kane: from hero to zero

Kane had already converted once from 12-yards before he was presented the chance to do so again deep into the second-half.

He can thank Mount for creating the opportunity to beat fellow Tottenham Hotspur man Hugo Lloris for a second time on the night.

Mount’s intelligent run in behind the France back-line forced Theo Hernandez to make a very clumsy challenge in the box.

After a VAR review and check on the pitch side monitor, referee Wilton Sampaio awarded the spot-kick.

History could not repeat itself, however, as Kane crashed his effort well over the bar and into the stands.

With that miss went England’s dreams of continuing their campaign in Qatar.

Joe Cole’s son curses Mason Mount’s luck

Gareth Southgate’s men fell to the turf in despair at the full-time whistle, mirroring the emotions of the millions watching at home.  

“I watched it with my children at home and my youngest – he is just seven – finished the night distraught. He loves Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Mason Mount,” explained Cole.

Thankfully for the former Chelsea winger and his kids, they will have plenty more chances to see Mount and co. at an international tournament.

England’s squad is brimming with young, talent who should be in and around the camp for at least the next decade.

Scroll through the ages of the Three Lions, and it’s clear the country is in good hands.

Along with Mount (23), there is Jude Bellingham (19), Bukayo Saka (21), Phil Foden (22), Conor Gallagher (22), Rice (23) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (24).

Then there’s the likes of Reece James (23) and Ben Chilwell (25), who would’ve surely travelled to the World Cup had they not suffered injuries.
