Paul Merson can’t quite believe Chelsea signed Raheem Sterling in this transfer window.

The pundit is absolutely “flabbergasted” that Premier League champions Manchester City entertained the idea of selling Sterling to a close English rival.

He completed a £47.5million transfer to Stamford Bridge earlier this week and is now training with the Chelsea squad during the pre-season trip to the United States (see picture below).

The 27-year-old winger joins the Blues group as someone with extreme Premier League know-how, plus he’s been a reliable source of goals during his time at Man City.

Merson can’t believe Chelsea signed Sterling

For certain, plenty are surprised to see Sterling leave Manchester and make the move to West London.

The England attacker’s actually returning home to the capital after a making a name for himself up north, but comes back as the finished article.

Merson can’t believe what Chelsea have achieved this summer by securing a deal for him:

“Raheem Sterling will give them a massive lift – he’s a talented footballer who can play anywhere across the frontline as we’ve seen over the years for club and country. He has my respect and should have no trouble adapting to Thomas Tuchel’s philosophy at Chelsea, having flourished in the Premier League for Liverpool and Manchester City,” Merson wrote.

“Raheem Sterling is another player I’d like to touch upon and I think he could well turn out to be the new signing who impresses the most this season. I’m flabbergasted that Manchester City let him go to a Premier League rival

“People go on about Sterling’s technique and the number of chances he supposedly misses, but he scores big goals for club and country and has done so consistently for a number of years now!”

Experience beyond his years

It’s crazy in some ways to think Sterling is still only 27.

A four-time Premier League winner, Sterling is exactly the kind of introduction to the Chelsea dressing room that should receive a lot of respect from his new peers. In fact, Blues midfielder Conor Gallagher has already mentioned how much he admirers the club’s new signing.

He’s a talented attacker joining just as he reaches his peak years, so there’s big expectation on him to contribute on the pitch. Don’t be surprised to hear him making a big impact off the field, too.
