Journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport that he’s surprised that Spain international Marcos Alonso is still currently at Chelsea.

The full-back has been widely reported to be closing in on a move to Barcelona, a move he has seemingly been hoping for since last season ended.

His time at Stamford Bridge has been filled with highs and lows, with his regular source of goals being a factor they have relied on often.

However, his defensive woes have been notable during his time in London, notably criticised by Frank Lampard which saw a falling put between the pair.

While Barcelona are close to a deal, Alonso is currently still a Chelsea player, with Phillips stating he believed it would be completed earlier this summer.

Phillips shocked Alonso is still at Chelsea

He said: “I’m surprised that it hasn’t happened yet. As soon as the weekend was over, I was expecting that to be confirmed.

“But it is still very close. I think all they’re doing is literally just waiting for Barcelona to activate that fourth lever, which I believe might have already happened now.

“They’re just waiting for the final green light from Barcelona. Everything else is agreed. Personal terms, fee, everything’s ready to go.”

The Spaniard was left out of the Premier League opener against Everton at his personal request, with all parties involved aware the deal was due to be completed.

The Catalan club may be waiting to finalise a deal to sell Frenkie de Jong before signing any more players this summer, given that they are currently struggling to register players they purchased earlier in the window.

The Blues could actually nudge this in the right direction, with them reportedly waiting in the wings to sign the Dutchman should he accept his reported fate and leave Xavi’s side this summer.
