‘Isn’t hitting the heights’: TalkSPORT pundit critical of 23-year-old Chelsea player’s displays this season

Danny Murphy has been critical of Chelsea’s Mason Mount for his performances so far this season.

Mount, who’s grown into a real talisman at Stamford Bridge, has taken his game to incredible heights during the last couple of years under Thomas Tuchel.

Unfortunately, Tuchel’s sacking last week as Blues manager means it’s a clean slate for the squad under new head coach, Graham Potter.

Mount could benefit from a restart in this season after a slow start from him on an individual basis.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder isn’t yet operating at his sharpest, which is something England manager Gareth Southgate will surely be paying close attention to ahead of the World Cup this winter.

Danny Murphy critical of Mason Mount

TalkSPORT pundit Murphy claims Chelsea’s attacker is someway short of his standards from last year.

He would still pick him in the England squad for the upcoming international break this month, though.

“Mount isn’t hitting the heights he did last season in terms of his goals and assists,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“I love Mount, and he’d be in my [England] squad, but you know what I’m saying.”

Mount’s got zero goal contributions from his opening seven Chelsea appearances this campaign, which is poor for a player that gets into great forward positions in a talented team.

He set the bar for himself last season with 13 goals and 16 assists in 53 games across all competitions.

It won’t be a surprise if Mount’s his own biggest critic, so he’ll know he needs to do more when it comes to attacking contributions.

However, a big positive for him is that Potter is reportedly an admirer of his already.

It’s going to be interesting to see how a new-look side under Chelsea’s new boss takes shape in the weeks ahead.
