Gary Cahill has had the opportunity to watch a few of Chelsea’s open training sessions under Enzo Maresca.
Behind the scenes, there is still obviously quite a lot of work for the new Chelsea manager to do. Things did not quite go to plan for his squad in the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
Chelsea lost three out of their five games, including Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid.
Before that, Chelsea were beaten 4-2 by Manchester City and 4-1 at the hands of Celtic, though there was a 3-0 win against Club America sandwiched in between.
Clearly, though, there is much room for improvement, with Maresca concerned about Chelsea’s backline at the minute.

Gary Cahill enjoying Enzo Maresca’s approach
It may be a while before everything starts to come together for Maresca. Cahill, though, has claimed that the Italian is very “hands-on” in training and thinks that is good to see.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, the club’s former captain said: “I have also had the chance to watch several open training sessions and matches now and you can see just how hands-on Enzo Maresca is on the pitch.
“It is great to see he is so involved in everything they are doing and has a clear way he wants the team to play.
“Without wanting to sound like I am speaking for him, these weeks are probably vitally important for him and the players as you can spend the whole day getting to know each other and working on the new way of playing and what he expects from his team.”
Cahill has also spoken about Conor Gallagher, who is now set to leave Chelsea for Atletico Madrid.
Some Chelsea supporters would have wanted a manager like Carlo Ancelotti
After Mauricio Pochettino’s exit, there would have been Chelsea fans who would have wanted a more experienced manager like Carlo Ancelotti to come in.
Ancelotti, who just oversaw Real Madrid’s friendly win versus Chelsea, led Los Blancos to yet another Champions League trophy last season.
However, that is not the direction the club’s owners want to go in. They wanted a young and promising coach like Maresca. Had that not been the case, then Thomas Tuchel or Jose Mourinho probably would have returned to Stamford Bridge.
Ultimately, it is a huge gamble Chelsea have taken on Maresca, and some will already be worried after some of the team’s displays during pre-season. But with time, perhaps the Italian will come good. It is possible when you look at the amount of talent he has at his disposal.
