Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have come up with some interesting strategies since taking over Chelsea.
Chelsea‘s transfer policy under them has seen the club sign plenty of young players, with even more set to join.
Nineteen-year-old Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino is having his medical with Chelsea today, so that is another youngster who will be joining the Blues.
Under their new owners, Chelsea have also been giving out extremely long contracts.
Renato Veiga, for example, has signed a seven-year contract with the club following his move from Basel earlier this month.
Tony Cascarino not a fan of Chelsea’s contract policy
Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has been speaking about his old club’s contract policy specifically, warning Boehly and Co that they are likely to face problems later down the line.
Speaking on talkSPORT (28/07/2024 at 08:57), he said: “These eight-year contracts, I just don’t know how you keep players for that long. Players get disillusioned after a year. I just don’t know how… the length of the contract just seems way too long.
“And I get it for financial reasons, I understand all of that, but what I would say that keeping players happy and expecting them to stay for that long just doesn’t work. It just doesn’t work, in my experience.”
The talkSPORT pundit has also discussed Chelsea’s striker situation recently. Cascarino thinks Chelsea should sign Ivan Toney over Julian Alvarez if they have a choice between the Brentford and Manchester City forwards this summer.
One benefit of Chelsea’s contract policy
Chelsea’s new contract policy has been heavily criticised, but there are a couple of pros that come with it.
Back in 2022, Chelsea lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers. A year later, they were forced to sell another key player, Mason Mount, after he entered the final 12 months of his contract.
Mount could now leave Manchester United despite having only joined the Red Devils last summer.
Giving all of their new signings six–eight-year deals will help prevent the above from happening.
Chelsea will not want more situations like the Mount one, which Conor Gallagher currently finds himself in, for example.
As what happened with Mount, the midfielder now finds himself into the last 12 months of his contract. If that is not renewed soon, then you would expect Chelsea to sell him before the transfer window closes.
