Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles says his side were able to take Chelsea’s confidence away in their 4-1 win on Saturday.
Chelsea went into the fixture in good form, taking four points from their previous two matches against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, speaking on BBC’s Total Sport – North East after the game, Jamaal Lascelles said his side managed to really hit the visitors’ confidence as the match went on.
The Newcastle captain was able to get his name on the scoresheet on the day, with Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon the other players to register for the Magpies.
It was a really bad afternoon for Chelsea, who saw Reece James get sent off. Mauricio Pochettino was left feeling disappointed with his skipper because of his ill-discipline.
Newcastle destroyed Chelsea’s confidence
According to Lascelles, the timing of Newcastle’s goals really knocked the stuffing out of Chelsea.
Discussing the game on Total Sport – North East, the centre-back said: “We knew it was going to be a tough game. They have some world-class individuals on that team, so we knew it had to be right.
“But I thought we were the much better team today. I think the timing of the goals we scored took their confidence away, especially during the second half.”

Can Chelsea recover?
You really have to fear for this Chelsea team after such a game. They are a young, inexperienced and quite immature side, with their ill-discipline this season showing that.
When you look at some of the yellow cards that they have been picking up, you can also say that they are emotional.
Reece James got his two on Saturday for kicking the ball away and pulling down a Newcastle player after losing the ball, which just screams frustration.
Simply put, this is a Chelsea team that are letting their emotions get the better of them. If they have lost confidence again, it would not be a surprise if they struggled to rediscover it and do not recover from the Newcastle defeat.
They take on Brighton & Hove Albion next, which is obviously not going to be an easy game. Lose that, and their confidence is going to take another hit, what is left of it anyway.
