Jamie Carragher shares what Chelsea have done that has actually made him look ‘silly’

Pundits and supporters alike have not hesitated to criticise Chelsea for the transfer business they have completed over the last few seasons.

It is no secret that the Blues have spent big since Todd Boehly and Co took over the ownership of the club, twice smashing their transfer record.

A lot of signings have also been made with an eye to the future, many of whom not even featuring for the first team as of yet.

There have been some real stars signed though, and the most impressive so far has been Cole Palmer.

His brilliance will make him the most important player on the pitch for Enzo Maresca this season, and his campaign gets underway with a chance to prove himself against his former side, Manchester City.

One figure who has remained critical of the Blues is Jamie Carragher, however even he has admitted that he got things wrong when it came to Palmer.

Carragher admits Cole Palmer signing has made him look silly

He said to The Overlap: “It is one he got wrong. But you know what I almost admire Pep. I don’t think he would have envisaged what was going to happen at Chelsea last season. But number one he has got Foden and Bernardo Silva.

“I think managers in the past would almost not sanction that deal because he has gone to Chelsea, another big club, he could do really well, it makes me look silly. But fair play to Pep Guardiola he has given the lad a chance, and fair play to the lad to go out and go and play.

“He is a real Manchester lad, he has gone to London, huge club in Chelsea and I actually think last season when we pick our team of the year, I was just swapping all day between Foden and Palmer because I was thinking every time I watch Palmer he scores a goal or creates a goal.

“He is probably more influence for Chelsea than Foden is for City. But then Foden scored a goal in the Champions League final but for me Cole Palmer was or was basically the best player in the league alongside Phil Foden.

“I just hope the change of manager doesn’t affect him as I think Pochettino with young players, with he did at Tottenham and what he did with Cole Palmer, what he did with a lot of young players at Chelsea, I thought Chelsea were going places, and I hope we don’t see a drop off because I think he is a superstar.”

Palmer is believed to see a number of his appearances come in a more central role next season, reflecting his importance on the creativity of the team.

Noni Madueke hoping to start new season

This could benefit Noni Madueke, who will be hoping to start the new season after some impressive showings in pre-season.

Reports have claimed that Chelsea may well actually be not finished when it comes to transfers this month, with a new attacker seemingly on the agenda.

The Blues have been linked with the addition of Victor Osimhen for many months now, and talk has begun to step up that he could be on his way this summer.
