There’s a number of players at Chelsea right now in a real purple patch of form, but not everybody at Stamford Bridge is quite on that same wavelength.
The current Chelsea squad is stacked with so much talent, which has led to Enzo Maresca heavily shuffling his pack between matches in the Premier League and various cup competitions. In fact, many people have pointed out that the Blues basically now have an ‘A-team’ and a ‘B-team’.
Well, Chelsea’s side for cup competitions suffered a setback this week after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup following a 2-0 loss away at Newcastle. Newcastle fans even ripped into midfielder Enzo Fernandez for his performance against them, so it was a sobering evening for the ‘B-team’.

Jason Cundy says Joao Felix flatters to deceive at Chelsea
Jason Cundy has delivered a criticism of Chelsea’s Joao Felix by claiming that the attacker does sometimes underwhelm on the football pitch.
When discussing Felix on talkSPORT, Cundy said: “He’s left wanting a little bit. He kinds of flatters to deceive at times…
“The problem that Felix has got he is one of those players who’s in-between. He’s not in the A-team. He’s in the B-team, but he’s in that mid area.”
Chelsea fans criticised Felix’s display against Newcastle in midweek during the Carabao Cup loss. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old Portuguese attacker was unable to find his shooting boots.
Joao Felix still hasn’t started a Premier League game this season
It would be a massive shock to see Felix named in Chelsea’s starting XI this Sunday for the league trip to Manchester United. Therefore, his next start could be next Thursday versus Noah in the Conference League.
While Felix can be satisfied with still getting minutes in the cups, a player of his calibre must be so frustrated to be frequently overlooked in the league.
| Competition | Appearances (Starts) | Goals | Assists | Minutes played |
| Premier League | 5 (0) | 1 | 0 | 117 |
| Conference League | 2 (2) | 2 | 0 | 180 |
| Carabao Cup | 2 (2) | 0 | 1 | 166 |
As flagged above, Felix has started zero games in the Premier League so far this season. In fact, it’s worrying that he’s been an unused substitute in three of the last four top-flight matches.
Maresca wanted to sign another centre-back rather than Felix in the summer, so perhaps it’s not the biggest surprise he’s struggling for minutes.
There’s no way Felix is budging Cole Palmer from the number 10 position anytime soon, which is why he’s in a tricky spot right now. It might be worth him knocking on the manager’s door and asking to be deployed in the wide areas.
