Jason Cundy claims Chelsea player ‘looks like a captain’ on the football pitch

Chelsea may have assembled a young group of players together at Stamford Bridge, but it’s so important that a few individuals step forward as leaders.

In Chelsea history, the Blues have been fortunate to have legendary captains such as John Terry, Dennis Wise and Cesar Azpilicueta. That same kind of leadership doesn’t exist in the current crop of players yet, though.

Enzo Maresca, the Blues manager, has already spoken publicly this season about leadership at the club.

Maresca admitted he wants to see more leadership from Chelsea captain Reece James, who’s now returned from his latest injury and his starting games in the Premier League.

Jason Cundy thinks Moises Caicedo is becoming a leader at Chelsea

Jason Cundy has singled out Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, 23, as someone who’s beginning to show leadership traits on the football pitch.

Cundy told talkSPORT: “There’s often a criticism about this Chelsea team about not having a leader. He (Caicedo) is now starting to emerge as one of those leaders on the pitch. I think that’s really important because he’s not just doing his job, but he looks like a captain, he plays like a captain. I think that’s something this squad has missed… He now looks like a real leader.”

John Obi Mikel recently tipped Caicedo as a future Chelsea captain, which is something that does make a lot of sense.

The top-class central midfielder is one of the first names on the team sheet, has a superb injury record, and runs through brick walls for his teammates.

Could Moises Caicedo become Chelsea captain?

Caicedo has stepped up and worn the captain’s armband on the rare occasion for Chelsea, but academy graduate James remains the club skipper for now.

Chelsea supporters claimed Caicedo is like the captain after Sunday’s draw with Manchester United, so the midfielder’s leadership and example on the pitch is being spotted by plenty.

In an ideal world, the captain should be playing every week and providing consistency.

As seen above, James has had real difficulty keeping himself fit in recent times, so perhaps focusing on his own game and handing the responsibility of the armband to a teammate could make sense. The likes of Caicedo, Levi Colwill or even Cole Palmer could make great alternatives as captain.
