Jason Cundy delivers verdict on Kobbie Mainoo to Chelsea transfer rumours, one thing would ‘amaze’ him

It came as a shock to most people earlier this week when Chelsea were linked with a move for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo.

Chelsea are widely rumoured to be eyeing Man United and England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as a potential transfer target. Jadon Sancho has been a success since he joined the Blues last summer, so could they be about to make another raid on Old Trafford?

Chelsea are prepared to move for Man United’s Mainoo once they’ve received encouragement to do so from the player.

TalkSPORT pundit and Chelsea supporter Jason Cundy is a bit sceptical about the Mainoo transfer rumours.

While he does admit that the Man United midfielder is an “exceptional” youngster, he’d be “amazed” if the 19-year-old is allowed to leave.

“The fact that we are talking about a player who’s on £20,000-a-week by all accounts and wants closer to £200,000-a-week, which is probably what he’s worth with his stature at the football club, I wonder whether this is an agent trying to smoke out a new deal,” Cundy told talkSPORT.

“It doesn’t surprise me if we are interested either because he’s an exceptional young talent. It’s difficult to say.

“This won’t happen in January. But watch it closely because we know with all the financial rules we’ve had to sell homegrown players…

“I’ll be amazed if they let him go. The Man United fans will be absolutely devastated if they do.”

Mainoo, who’s a Man United academy graduate, is definitely a star in the making. It’s hard to see why the all-action central midfielder would make sense for the Blues, though.

Chelsea should forget about targeting Mainoo because they’ve already got so much talent in midfield, especially when Andrey Santos returns from his season-long loan with Strasbourg.

When you look at the current Blues squad, it’s crying out for more proven experience in either the centre-back or striker position.

Enzo Fernandez slowly filling key role at Chelsea

Like Mainoo, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez is a midfield star who’s capable of doing a bit of everything.

There’s signs that Fernandez may be struggling with a bit of fatigue recently due to a busy schedule and lack of rest, but we’re really encouraged by his development in the first half of the season.

The 23-year-old central midfielder is contributing both offensively and defensively in Maresca’s XI. He’s fully warranting wearing the captain’s armband recently, too.

As you can see above, Fernandez is contributing in so many different areas as he begins to shake off his mega £106m price tag. The Argentine World Cup winner just needs to consistently perform because there’s big expectation on his shoulders.

Mainoo wouldn’t be getting into the side at Chelsea ahead of Fernandez, Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia.
