It came as a major surprise earlier this week when Chelsea were linked with Manchester United and England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in the transfer rumour mill.
The current Chelsea owners haven’t been shy in splashing the cash at Stamford Bridge, but will there be any big movements during the mid-season January transfer window?
Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo, 19, is the latest individual to be tipped with a potential move to West London.
Chelsea lead the chase for Mainoo if he leaves Man Utd amid uncertainty around his future at Old Trafford. The Blues are ready to move for the teenage midfielder if he cannot agree to new contract terms, and they’re currently at a stalemate in discussions. Furthermore, Man United’s financial problems have now made Mainoo’s exit a possibility

Chelsea fans react to Kobbie Mainoo link
Unsurprisingly, there’s been a lot of talk on social media since the Mainoo speculation started yesterday.
Many Chelsea supporters are in agreement that another central midfielder is the last thing they need to buy in the transfer market. Instead, they should be focusing on defensive or offensive recruitments.
Here are Blues fans on X discussing Man United’s Mainoo:
One fan wrote: “I highly rate Mainoo but we don’t need another midfielder.” “Mainoo to Chelsea? Lol our midfield is packed,” another added.
One supporter claimed: “We need a 6’3 physical monster of a defender. We need a proper striker. Yet we are going for a 6’0 centre-back and Mainoo who is another midfielder.” “We don’t need Mainoo we need a striker,” another said.
One fan commented: “Not sure what to make of Kobbie Mainoo rumour, would dread to think of the fee Man United would want and if we’re daft enough to pay it. We need a striker and a centre-back, would be further wasted cash.”
Mainoo, who’s an academy graduate at Man United, is certainly an exciting young talent. The teenager’s played 52 first-team matches in United’s colours, plus he’s got 10 senior caps for England.
Speaking back in April, Danny Murphy suggested Mainoo is better than Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo. While that’s not a comment that’s aged well because the Blues ace is levels above right now, there’s no doubt that Man United’s midfield star is a future gem.

Kobbie Mainoo same transfer value as Levi Colwill
Mainoo is currently one of the most valuable youngsters playing in the Premier League, along with Chelsea duo Levi Colwill and Romeo Lavia.
According to Transfermarkt, Mainoo is one of the Premier League’s most valuable Under-21 players.
| Player | Age | Market value |
| Rasmus Hojlund | 21 | €60m |
| Leny Yoro | 19 | €55m |
| Kobbie Mainoo | 19 | €55m |
| Savinho | 20 | €55m |
| Levi Colwill | 21 | €55m |
| Alejandro Garnacho | 20 | €50m |
| Rico Lewis | 20 | €40m |
| Evan Ferguson | 20 | €40m |
| Romeo Lavia | 21 | €40m |
| Jhon Duran | 21 | €40m |
Blues head coach Enzo Maresca is already working with such a young and talented Chelsea squad, so will Mainoo be the latest developing prodigy to join the ranks? Incidentally, we agree with the supporters above that the midfield area shouldn’t be a transfer priority in 2025.
