Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino refused to use a couple of dubious refereeing decisions as an excuse for his side’s big defeat at Liverpool last night.
The Blues were soundly beaten 4-1 by Liverpool yesterday at Anfield in the Premier League.
Despite ending up as deserved losers, Chelsea have the right to be frustrated by some moments from the officials. In particular, we think Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk was very lucky not to concede two penalties.
Speaking via TNT Sports 1 in his post-match interview (10:55pm, 31 January), Mauricio Pochettino ultimately said his team weren’t good enough.
The Chelsea head coach explained: “It was bad luck for us [on the penalty appeals] but that doesn’t change the feeling Liverpool were better than us.”
Joe Cole was seriously impressed by Pochettino coming out after the Liverpool result and owning up to the defeat
“Pochettino I thought spoke absolutely brilliantly because he said at the start of the interview I thought these two were penalties tonight but Liverpool were much, much better than us. He’s owned it and it’s one game, so you have to move on,” Cole said on TNT Sports 1 (10:58pm, 31 January).

It’ll provide little comfort to Blues supporters how the manager responded to the 4-1 loss.
Yes, the visitors were on the wrong end of some dodgy refereeing. We don’t think even the most positive Chelsea fan would argue that the team deserved any points last night, though.
It’s very concerning that Liverpool are Chelsea’s opponents in this month’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
