John Obi Mikel says who should be captaining Chelsea when Reece James is not available

John Obi Mikel has claimed that he’d much prefer to see a different player wear the Chelsea captain’s armband over Enzo Fernandez when Reece James is absent.

Chelsea have been without club captain Reece James so far this season. He’s not being rushed back from his latest injury issue, so he’s still waiting for his first appearance of the campaign.

Instead, Enzo Fernandez has largely stepped into the leadership role and been the skipper on the pitch.

Chelsea have had incredible captains throughout history, but we’re not sure the same kind of leadership is flowing through the players in the current squad.

John Obi Mikel wants different stand-in Chelsea captain

John Obi Mikel believes that Levi Colwill or Moises Caicedo should captain Chelsea whenever James is missing.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, he said: “Levi Colwill, for me, I think in the absence of Reece James, he should be the captain of that football club right now. Either him or Moises Caicedo.”

Enzo Maresca is putting his faith in Fernandez for the time being to lead the side, but let’s wait and see if that changes.

Levi Colwill would captain Chelsea very well

We agree that Colwill, who’s a Chelsea academy graduate, would make great sense as captain of the current first team. In fact, if James’ injury problems persist, it may even be worth considering him for a permanent role as skipper.

First of all, Colwill’s performances look super impressive this season now that he’s getting a proper run in his preferred position at centre-back.

In addition, the 21-year-old Englishman plays with the kind of aggression and authority that this young team is crying out for. We’ve noticed him sometimes lead the team huddles on the pitch pre-match, too.

GiveMeSport recently claimed that Maresca is super impressed by Colwill and his work behind the scenes, so we’d love to see him wear the captain’s armband in the games ahead.
