If any individual player can some up what many fans think it means to play for Chelsea, then John Terry would be just that.
The former club captain won near enough everything that was on offer during his time at Stamford Bridge, however there was one trophy that alluded him in his spell.
The Club World Cup formally saw the Champions League winners feature in a small tournament with their counterparts from around the world.
The Blues’ only effort at this when Terry was at the club ended in defeat, although Chelsea rectified this with victory in 2022.
The tournament now takes a new shape, and will make it’s debut in the extended format next summer.
John Terry excited for Chelsea in the Club World Cup
Terry has claimed he thinks Chelsea fans will be excited to see what is to come from the Blues as they hunt another trophy.
He said to Ben Jacobs: “100% as a football club, we (Chelsea) are going to be prepared to go there and be looking to win it. We’re excited and delighted to be there, and we’re going to come and bring our best players, our best squad, and give it our best opportunity, because I think that’s what the fans want to see.
“So again, super excited to be part of it. I think for Chelsea are at the moment as well, it’s really a bit of good news that we would like, it’s an opportunity to win another trophy.”
Chelsea in trophy drought
As far as the Blues in the 21st century go, they are on somewhat of a trophy doubt at the moment.
The Club World Cup was their last piece of silverware, with them tasting a painful defeat in the League Cup final last season to Liverpool.
It cannot be underestimated how important a trophy can be to this young group of players, many of whom are in for long futures in West London.
For supporters too, it will be crucial to be given some belief that the project under Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali is heading in the right direction, and they will be back amongst Europe’s elite again very soon.
